“The boss wasn't just the greatest and best manager I ever played under. He was also a father figure to me from the moment I arrived at the club at the age of 11 until the day I left.
“Without him I would never have achieved what I have done in my career. He understood how important it was to play for your country and he knew how much it meant to me.”
When Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement, David Beckham made these comments on his Facebook page.
This quote sums up the managerial style of the man who dominated English football during his 26 years as the manager of Manchester United. However, his skills had already been honed before he moved to join the Red Devils.
Prior to 1986, he played for Queen’s Park, Dunfermline, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayrs United before coaching at East Stirlingshire, St Mirren, Aberdeen. After a brief stint as manager of the Scottish national team, he made the historic choice to become the manager of Manchester United.
Despite the ups and downs over the next 26 years, he came out of rivalries with Liverpool, Newcastle United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City smelling like roses. When he announced his retirement on 8 May 2013, he had won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two Uefa Champions League trophies.
Not only has he been knighted for his contribution to the game, he has also won Manager of the Year the most times in British history. He is widely considered to be one of the most admired and respected managers in the history of the game.
