HEALTH BENEFITS OF CINNAMON

 CINNAMON

Health benefits of cinnamon?

1. Contains antioxidant properties

Like other spices, cinnamon contains plant compounds called polyphenols that have protective, antioxidant properties. It is these compounds that provide many of cinnamon’s health benefits as well as support its role as a preservative in food preparation.

2. It is anti-inflammatory

These same antioxidant compounds contribute towards cinnamon’s anti-inflammatory effects. As we age this may be helpful because the process of chronic inflammation is heavily involved in the progression of many age-related diseases.

3. It is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal

Cinnamon is thought to have many medicinal and soothing properties, and is used frequently in Chinese herbal medicine. The distinctive smell and flavour of cinnamon derives from the essential oils contained in the bark, called cinnamaldehyde.

Cinnamaldehyde appears to be useful in protecting against bacterial and fungal infection.

4. It may contain anti-viral properties

Some research suggests cinnamon may also be protective against certain viruses, including influenza and mosquito-derived Dengue fever.

5. It may assist in  lowering of blood sugar and reducing the risk of type-2 diabetes

Cinnamon has a reputation for helping manage blood sugar levels. It appears to do this by a number of different mechanisms, including managing the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream.

Human trials are promising and suggest cinnamon may have a moderate effect on lowering fasting blood sugar levels in diabetics with poor blood sugar control.

6. It may improve insulin sensitivity

Insulin is the hormone involved in transporting blood sugar from our blood to the cells where we need it, this means it plays an important role in regulating our metabolism and energy levels.

As we age we may become resistant to the effects of insulin and this has the potential to disrupt blood sugar balance and over time lead to type 2 diabetes. While more research is needed it does appear that extracts from cinnamon mimick the action of insulin and potentially reduce the risk of insulin resistance.

7. Beneficial for the ageing brain

Conditions like Alzheimer’s are more common as we age, and are typically caused by a progressive deterioration of brain cells. In Alzheimer’s, accumulation of protein fragments in the brain act by slowing how a person thinks and remembers.

Cinnamon contains two compounds that appear to inhibit the build up of these proteins. Much of this evidence is derived from animal and test tube studies, so there is still much for us to learn with regards to how this effect may be of benefit to us.

8. Helps in managing blood pressure

There is some evidence to suggest that consistent consumption of cinnamon is associated with a short-term reduction in blood pressure. Although the evidence looks hopeful, it is early days and more long-term random controlled trials are needed.

9. It may protect against heart disease

Blood pressure may not be the only cardiovascular risk factor aided by regular cinnamon consumption it also appears to have a positive impact on reducing blood triglycerides as well as cholesterol levels.

10. It may support gut health

Some spices, including cinnamon, have prebiotic properties. Consuming them regularly may help restore the balance of bacteria in your gut, support digestive health and alleviate digestive issues.

11. It may protect against cancer

Althoughevidence to date is limited to test tube and animal studies extracts from cinnamon may provide some protection against cancer. In this regard, the spice appears to be useful at reducing the growth of cancer cells, limiting the formation of blood vessels in tumours and killing of cancer cells.

12. It may promote dental hygiene

A traditional use for cinnamon has been as a tooth powder to treat toothache and other dental problems including bacterial growth and bad breath.

Is cinnamon safe for everyone?

For the majority of people, cinnamon is generally recognised as safe when consumed as a culinary spice and in small amounts – no more than 1 tsp per day is considered safe for most adults, with less for children. In rare circumstances, some people may experience allergic contact dermatitis.

Most of the cinnamon purchased from supermarkets is a variety called Cassia cinnamon – this has a stronger taste and is cheaper to buy. However, it is high in compounds called coumarins, which in large doses may cause toxicity. Ceylon, or ‘true’ cinnamon, has relatively low levels of coumarins and may be better tolerated.

If consumed in large amounts, cinnamon may interact with prescribed medication, including those for diabetes, heart and liver disease.

Overall, is cinnamon good for you?

There are plenty of reasons to add warming cinnamon to your diet. It’s high in antioxidants, which may help protect against disease, inflammation and ageing. What’s more, it may improve gut health, dental hygiene, reduce cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure. However, it’s important to note that more studies are needed into some of the benefits.

If you’re on prescription medication, have a relevant medical condition or have other related concerns, speak to your GP for further guidance.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR PHONE IS OVERHEATING?

PHONEIn the world we are in today, we rely heavily on our smartphones for just about everything—communication, work, entertainment, and more.

But like any electronic device, our phones can sometimes overheat, which can be uncomfortable to handle and might even cause damage if it is not well taken care of. Luckily, there are some easy ways to fix it and prevent it from happening again.

Here are some simple steps you can take when your phone is overheating and tips on how to avoid it in the future.

1.CLOSE BACKGROUND APPS YOU ARE NOT USING

One common reason for a phone to overheat is that too many apps are running in the background. When you leave apps open, even if you're not actively using them, they continue to work and use the phone’s processor. This can lead to your phone heating up over time. To solve this, go to your phone’s settings or app manager and close any apps that you’re not using. This will reduce the strain on your phone and help cool it down.

Sometimes your phone case can trap heat, making it harder for your phone to cool down. If your phone starts to feel hot, try taking off the case to give it a chance to breathe. Without the case, heat can escape more easily, and your phone will cool down faster. Just be careful when handling your phone without a case to avoid dropping it.

3.KEEP IT OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT

Leaving your phone in direct sunlight or using it outdoors on a hot day can cause it to overheat quickly.

Phones are sensitive to temperature, and excessive heat from the sun can make them hot to the touch. If you’re outside, try to keep your phone in the shade or in your bag when you’re not using it. This small step can help prevent overheating due to environmental factors.

Another reason your phone might be overheating is that the screen brightness is turned up too high. The brighter your screen, the more energy it uses, which can cause your phone to heat up. Reducing the brightness of your screen is a quick and simple way to reduce the temperature of your phone. You can also enable automatic brightness, which adjusts the screen based on the lighting around you, helping save energy and prevent overheating.

Tasks like gaming, video editing, or watching high-definition videos for long periods can cause your phone to overheat. These activities put a lot of pressure on the phone’s processor, causing it to heat up. If you notice your phone getting hot during these activities, take a break and let it cool down. You can also try closing other apps running in the background to reduce the workload on your phone.

If you’ve tried the tips above and your phone is still overheating, it’s best to turn it off for a few minutes.

This will give it time to cool down completely. If your phone continues to overheat frequently, it might be time to check for software updates or even consult a technician to make sure there’s no underlying issue.

Top banks test unified ledger concept; Fed says digital currencies can promote financial inclusion

10 banks, including HSBC, Wells Fargo , and the New York Federal Reserve, recently announced they have completed a proof of concept for the Regulated Liability Network (RLN).

The trial successfully tested bank deposit tokens and wholesale central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) on shared blockchain infrastructure, testing U.S. dollar payments both domestically and internationally.

The RLN could potentially bring together thousands of banks from around the world, as well as several central banks. The aim is to unify the messaging and settlement elements of banking as it is today, realizing significant cost and time savings for involved parties and opening up new business models made possible by programmable money.

The RLN test is one of many similar programs taking place worldwide. Recently, SWIFT announced it had been working with more than a dozen banks to conduct public blockchain experiments, and the European Union officially launched its European Digital Infrastructure Consortium.

The FED says digital currencies can help with financial inclusion

As the RLN and similar tests mentioned above show, banks and central banks are waking up to the power of blockchain technology to disrupt and innovate. In May, the Federal Reserve released its 2022 report on the economic well-being of U.S. households, and it acknowledged the potential for digital currencies to promote financial inclusion.

According to the report, 44% of digital currency users in the poorest demographic use it for peer-to-peer payments, while 16% of the wealthiest holders use it for similar processes. Five percent of unbanked adults use digital currencies for payments.

While the overall use of digital currencies for “any reason” declined in the past few years, the number of people using them for payments increased.

Opinion: Banks are getting there, but they haven’t quite figured it all out yet

Banks aren’t known to be the most innovative or forward-thinking institutions when it comes to technology, and that’s especially true of central banks. Today, the majority of global payments still operate on the SWIFT system developed in 1971, and little has changed since then.

While it’s encouraging to see both central and large retail banks realizing the potential benefits of ‘unified ledgers’ and related technology, they still have a way to go before they realize the need for the original Bitcoin protocol—BSV blockchain.

Walled gardens such as the ReLN will be inherently limited both technologically and in terms of their utility. Open systems like the BSV blockchain, on which anyone can build a legal application, will allow for the same time/cost savings as the RLN, plus many other benefits thanks to the interoperability of the apps on the network.

Aside from utility, there is yet to be a single public blockchain that can come close to BSV blockchain’s scalability and fees. With the release of Teranode, the number of transactions the network can process per second will be truly unbounded, and the fees will be even smaller than the fraction of a cent per transaction they are today.

Experiments like the RLN, and realizations like the Federal Reserve’s that the poorest people in the nation find digital currencies useful for payments, are encouraging. However, in the end, many of the benefits of blockchains and digital ledgers are lost if each group uses its own private ledger. A global, public network, similar to the internet, is the end game, and only the BSV blockchain can deliver the scalability, uptime, and small fees required to make it happen.
